"you'll want to check out 'the linesman'." is all she said, but she winked as i drew back from her. i don't remember looking that book up, but when we (some climbing friends and i) left the store, i knew that the store was a time vortex or something. by reading that book, one would unlock the secrets of the time travel. that's how they got all those old books in great shape.
so, we're driving to the climbing spot, and my phone rings. i pick it up, and anna answers. she's been dead for two years now, and the same was true in the dream. i didn't want to spook her, because i was talking to her, and didn't wanna fuck something up or scare her or anything. she asked me a couple of things, oh, i remember having told her once a long time ago that i'd be seeing her soon. she asked me where i was, cos i had called a while ago, telling her i'd be home soon. i asked her where she was, but she wouldn't answer straight out. i eventually got out of her that she was at this mexican restaurant that we went to once. i know we only went there once. i said to her "this is gonna sound really strange, but what year is it?" she wouldn't answer. she sounded kind of put off, in fact, that i'd even ask. i didn't know if she was sick by this point or not. but that wasn't what i was getting at.

(break from the dream, this is the guy talking reality for a moment)
the last book we both read (her first, then me) was called the time traveller's wife, by audrey niffeneggar. if you haven't read it, i would highly suggest you do so. when you do, you'll know why this book especially means something more than just a book we read together.

(back to the dream).

i was trying to discern if she had read this book yet or not, in the time she was calling me from. i guess in the dream she was already sick, but she didn't know she was gonna die. in the book, henry dies, and claire knows it. but henry's the one who time travels, and is always hiding things from claire. it's a great turn of circumstances...i was trying to figure out if the anna on the phone had read the book, and put together that she was gonna die. but i didn't want to scare her.
i asked her a couple of times what the year was, but she wouldn't tell me. i finally asked if she had read anything by audrey niffeneggar. she finally said that she had, and she got a little choked up when she answered.
i knew that shew knew, at this point. that she was gonna die, i mean. in fact, she told me. something to the effect of "josh, i know." all i could do was manage to get out "i love you so much, anna. i miss you." and it was completely garbled, cos i was crying already, but i didn't want to not say them. she ended with "i know, josh. i know."

end of dream.

Thursday, October 05, 2006

Wow.

DJ Diplo brings infectious Brazilian grooves to Hailey's

06:19 PM CDT on Sunday, July 30, 2006

By CRAYTON HARRISON / The Dallas Morning News

DENTON – Great DJs are tastemakers, sifting through stacks of recordings to introduce us to new sounds and new scenes.

Philadelphia turntable maestro Diplo, who swung through Hailey's Friday night, is one of our best musical scouts. He helped export gritty, dirty Southern hip-hop to the rest of the nation, and his mixtape with M.I.A. helped make the Sri Lankan-British rapper a global star.

One of Diplo's latest discoveries, baile funk, features Brazilian vocalists rapping or shouting in a sing-song voice over bass-heavy dance beats. Two Brazilian acts – one baile funk, one rock – joined Diplo for Friday's show, and they made it clear why the scene has charmed the DJ so much.

Recordings of baile funk sound amateurish, and the screaming, chanting vocals can be grating. But in concert, Bonde do Role emcees Pedro D'eyrot and Marina Ribatski skillfully worked the crowd, bouncing and headbanging as if they were leading a punk-rock aerobics class.

Bonde do Role's beats were fun, too, pilfering the choicest riffs from rock anthems by AC/DC, the Darkness and Europe. The samples made the foreign sound a little more familiar.

Brazilian rock band CSS was led by the uninhibited Lovefoxxx. As her bandmates churned out bratty punk riffs with dance beats, Lovefoxxx turned the stage into a jungle gym, climbing anything she could find: musical equipment, support beams, people. During the raucous "Meeting Paris Hilton," she grabbed a crutch from the audience and hoisted it in the air triumphantly.

"If you want to get nude, now is the time!" Lovefoxxx told the crowd before launching into the disco-laced "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above." Drummer Adriano Cintra reminded her she wasn't in Brazil anymore. "I believe it's a crime here," he cautioned.

Diplo was friendly but more subdued, concentrating on his work. No matter. By midnight, when he began his set, the crowd had been sufficiently hyped. One by one, fans began to climb onstage, some huddling around the DJ booth, others grinding and shaking their behinds up at the front where everyone could see.

For a little while, a video projector showed images of the Beastie Boys or the Bangles as Diplo mixed their vocals with beats from other pop songs. But then Mr. D'eyrot grabbed the projector and started pointing it at the ceiling. A giant disco ball made its way through the crowd.

Diplo sped up the vocals on Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot," laying them over a thumping rhythm. Then the beat slowed, ushering in the Dixie Cups' "Chapel of Love" and the Beatles' "Twist and Shout."

On it went: an M.I.A. song, some screaming vocals in Portuguese, the rap hit "Hustlin' " by Miami's Rick Ross, all blending together into the universal language known as dance music.

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

I broke my ankle. I screwed up my itunes and lost about 2000 mp3s. I am now in the
process of creating a list of the music I need to acquire again.
